Ovarian Cancer impacts thousands of families each year, whether it be from hearing the initial diagnosis to the unfortunate passing of a loved one.

My families first experience with Ovarian Cancer was in 2009, which became an insanely tough year for us. The latter stages of 2008 saw my Mum's Mum pass away from Cancer, and so with the grief of the loss of our Nanna, the last thing we needed to hear was more bad news. However, a few months later after having a few precautionary tests and scans, we learned of Mums diagnosis. The initial diagnosis was Endometrial Cancer (just like Nanna); words that no family wish to hear. In typical mum fashion, she wasted no time in book all the scans, tests & surgeries necessary to get ahead of the spread... but it was too late. Surgical review revealed that her cancer had already metastasised to her both her ovaries.

Ovarian Cancer often goes undetected due to the difficulty of diagnosis, yet there we were being told that mum had stage III Ovarian Cancer. Shattered. In a matter of months, mum's whole life changed. She spent the next 10 months undergoing chemotherapy, radiation therapy and brachytherapy. Mum lost just about everything one could lose within a year, but she never gave up. Being told she had a 35% chance of survival within 5 years of diagnosis and only a 49% chance after - safe to say Mum absolutely kicked cancer's ass. Now, 14 years in remission and thriving, mum was lucky to defy the odds. However, there are many who are not.

I am starting this fundraiser to support the OCRF with their impactful work in discovering new ways to help detect, diagnose, support and treat all women impacted by Ovarian Cancer. I aim to raise $5,000 by July 2nd, where I will be running both the 21.1km HALF Marathon and 42.2km FULL Marathons at the GC Marathon Festival.
