Institution: Walter & Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research Lead

Research Pillar: New & Effective Treatments

Project Description:

Treatment options for ovarian cancer have not significantly changed in over three decades. In this project the team at Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, led by Dr Holly Barker, aim to understand why ovarian cancer, particularly ovarian carcinosarcoma, is such an aggressive cancer.

The researchers have conducted genetic screens and drug screens to identify potential targets, and they will develop organoid models in order to test the most promising drug combinations against their identified targets.

Expected/Achieved Outcomes:

Knowledge Building: The aim is to generate preliminary data that could be translated into a clinical setting, ultimately providing faster outcomes for patients and offering a new option to patients for whom current standard of care therapies are not effective.

Project Status:

The team are currently finalising in vivo studies and validating the most promising drugs with the hope of an upcoming clinical trial for rapid research translation.
