One of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation’s primary focus areas is to fund ovarian cancer research. Research remains the only solution to improve outcomes for those with ovarian cancer.
FUNDING PROCESS
To ensure the OCRF funds the most promising and innovative projects, the OCRF’s annual National Research Grants Program is guided by committees of independent experts, including the International Scientific Advisory Committee and Lived Experience Advisory Panel, before a final decision is made by our Board. OCRF grants support projects between one and three years, through two categories: Pilot and Project grants.

Our Research Impact Strategy 2025-30 guides all OCRF funding decisions. It sets the vision, objectives, and principles that shape how we invest in ovarian cancer research.
Research Objectives
Our funded research focuses on projects that aims to prevent, detect, or treat ovarian cancer.
Our Grants Programs
Our grants are delivered through two funding streams:
- National Research Grants Program: Our flagship grants program funds promising and innovative ovarian cancer research across Australia and New Zealand.
- Partnerships Grants Program: Leveraging additional funding for ovarian cancer research through co-funded partnerships.
The National Research Grants Program offers two grant categories:
- Pilot grants (new): for preliminary studies or proof-of-concept projects.
- Project grants: for more established research over one to three years.
National Research Grants Program Selection Process
Applicants first submit an Expression of Interest (EOI), with shortlisted applicants invited to submit a full proposal.
Applications are considered and assessed by:
- International Scientific Advisory Committee (ISAC): comprising international and Australian experts who evaluate the scientific merit of proposals.
- Lived Experience Advisory Panel (LEAP): bringing the perspectives of survivors with lived experience of ovarian cancer to ensure research is designed, conducted, and translated with the consumer in mind.
- OCRF Board: providing final approval, with broad expertise and skills to ensure sustainability and accountability.

Funding Awarded
Funding is awarded to research projects for one to three years, depending on the application. Timeframes and budgets are contingent on grant category (Pilot or Project).
Contract Administration
After funding agreements are awarded, researchers must provide scheduled updates on their research progress. Grants are reviewed and continued funding is awarded if progress milestones are met.
Outcomes and Impact
OCRF-funded research contributes to improving survivability rates and quality of life for those diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Project successes and findings help build the knowledge and evidence base of the sector in Australia, New Zealand, and globally.
